Ideal for readers who enjoy deep, emotional, and reflective stories.

In the early Great Enlightenment, Philosopher Baruch Spinoza was one of the earliest to stress to humanity the importance of scholarship by stressing that learning, not for the sake of erudition itself, but for the sake of understanding the world and ourselves is of the highest order. It is such learning to the point of understanding which is liberating to humanity. To understand, sets you free. Another icon celebrated marine biologist, Rachel Carson, brought the focus more on to nature itself. To paraphrase, she stated that those who daily contemplate the beauty and mystery of nature will never be alone, nor will they ever grow weary of life. Such studies of life’s creation can often create a sense of connectedness as the student contemplates the grand scale of life itself.

It is this observation that led Dr. Obenchain into writing about nature, that is natural science. He has gained most pleasure out of creating unique narratives in the writing three books, one on the antivivisectionists as they confronted medieval medical scientist as they struggled towards modernity. Dr. Obenchain’s second book concerns the tragic life of a Hungarian obstetrician, Ignaz Semmelweis, who made an important discovery regarding disease contagion forty years, ahead of his time, and sadly, decades before his colleagues were educated enough to understand and accept his prescient observations. Obenchain’s third book concerns Martin Holmes, a man depressed and disabled by an unexplainable “ennui,” that is, an existential vacuousness of unclear origin. Through intensive study Holmes ultimately finds salvation, gaining a new understanding as to where he fits within the grand and ancient scheme of natural creation.

A MATTER OF GRAY AND WHITE

A Chronicle of the Men Who Elucidated the Interconnections of the Human Nervous System. (A 250-page work with 60 illustrations— (Undecided yet re publication).

If Dr. Obenchain were to have a mantra it would, in paraphrased form, be the observation of Rachel. Carson, celebrated marine biologist, author of Silent Spring, “Those who dwell daily among the beauties and mysteries of nature will never be alone, nor will they ever grow weary of life. This could serve as a sort of mantra for the website if a good space for such a thing exists.

Dr. Obenchain has completed his first effort at pure fiction, as yet untitled. It concerns a crazed psychiatrist who diabolically murders his adversaries via a unique, supposedly undetectable, form of homicidal surrogacy. Again, undecided re publication).

THE HISTORY OF CREATION

Obenchain synopsized the celebrated German naturalist, Ernst Haeckel’s two volume classic, The History of Creation, (reducing approximately 700 pages down to a more digestible eighty-five), for instructional and personal family use. No plans for publication.

What They Say

K. CODELL CARTER

Obenchain's account of Semmelweis's career is highly enjoyable. Its medical detail is impressive and exceeds that other account of the doctor's life. Obenchain's argument that Semmelweis suffered from bipolar disorder is original, and no other work has supported the hypothesis of Semmelweis's mental illness so thoroughly.

John D. Harris

I've read several biographies of Dr. Semmelweis as part of my research for a novel I'm writing about childbed fever. I found this biography to be the most definitive resource for my needs. Anyone wanting to know more about Dr. Semmelweis should start with this one.

This is an historical account of the story of Dr. Semmelweis, who spent years dealing with effects of a theory of infection and the need for sterilization without being able to fully articulate the theory and draw out its implications for practice.

Kirk Davis

A carefully written, authoritative and exhaustively researched work by a retired Neurosurgeon, summarizing not only the life and work of Semmelweis but additionally providing a medically grounded insight into some of the purported causes of his mental illness and death.

Paula M. White

I know the author, worked with him at a a local hospital when he was a fantastic nuerosurgeon. I can't wait for his next book.because he is as good a writer as he was neurosurgeon.

I was modestly interested in the ethics of animal experimentation when I started this book and there is a lot here for readers who have this interest. What made this book so great for me was it's depiction of the birth of modern medicine in the mid to late 1800's.

From DARKNESS to SUNRISE is a very well written and unique use of the combination of a fictional character's story combined with historical facts and science. It was extremely interesting that the character took the role of the author as the researcher and reviewer of the historical data and science that was described.
